Bellarine's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" Overflows with Talent

August 2-4 at the Stafford Township Arts Center

The live version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a bit darker than the animated version, and brings more realistic feelings and consequences to the stage, as Ian Mullin (Captain Phoebus) mentioned in his description of the show during an interview with some of the leads. I was interested to see how the Bellarine Theatre Company's cast and crew would interpret this classic love story, for love is the overriding theme, and as my friend Kathy noted, the show pulls at your heartstrings. Being in the audience for their final dress rehearsal felt like being in a Broadway theater, with the same level of raw talent.

The musical is based on Victor Hugo's novel Notre-Dame de Paris, and tells the story of a deformed and lonely figure, Quasimodo (Liam James McGettigan), the bellringer of the Notre Dame Cathedral, and those with whom his life becomes entwined. With the mesmerizing gypsy Esmerelda, played by Lizz Sooy, handsome Captain Phoebus, the oppressive Dom Claude Frollo, and a supporting cast of monks, townspeople, and statues, the show brings to life fifteenth century Paris in all of its contrasts. As Quasimodo struggles with his situation of being captive in the bell tower, he longs to experience the gaiety and liveliness of the Feast of Fools. The consequences of his choices will affect the fates of all the players in this twisting tale of love.

The show starts off with an ethereal air of monks signing their requiem, and this choral group weaves their voices throughout the performance, reaching heights and blending in harmonies that makes you feel as if you are soaring to the heavens. We begin to meet the principal players and learn their backstory that sets off the tumult of events to come, as NIck Somodi (Dom Frollo) carries you along with his deep, melodious voice. Throughout the show, Nick creates the powerful presence of a character torn between his beliefs, emotions, and desires, that draws out your feelings from sympathy to disgust.

Lizz Sooy gives an emotional and beautiful portrayal as Esmerelda, who beguiles not only Frollo, but also Phoebus and Quasimodo. Her character inspires love from all quarters, causing turmoil and heartache. Adeptly capturing the sultry and provocative nuances of the gypsies, Sooy is able to enchant the audience and make you feel the dangerous lure of gypsy life. Her counterpart in this tale is Ian Mullin, a dashing Captain Phoebus, who expresses his character's feelings with rich, melodic tones reminiscent of crooners, such as Frank Sinatra and Harry Connick, Jr.

But the standout of the show is Liam James McGettigan as Quasimodo. He evokes your pity, yet sings with such feeling that you want to find some way to help him escape the hunchback's miserable existence. You experience the character's humiliation and broken-heartedness with McGettigan's enthralling vocals and passionate expressions as the down-trodden and forsaken hunchback. His performance is evocative, and had me on the verge of tears.

With gypsies bringing vibrancy to the stage, and a chorus lending its voices to the cathedral setting, this Bellarine production is poised for success. Tragedy, love, obsession, and treachery converge in this outstanding show. The talented leads and strong choral accompaniment lift you up to the light and plunge you into the darkness of life. As one young performer from the show simply stated, "bring your tissues."

With only three performances, be sure to get your tickets as soon as possible, you don't want to miss this phenomenal show!
