A love of cooking runs in my family. I remember trips to Kansas to visit my grandparents and all of the delicious food we had, and the smell of my grandmother's pantry while she was cooking. Both of my parents were great cooks as well, and I loved watching them in the kitchen making all sorts of yummy masterpieces. I like continuing the tradition of family cooking with my daughter, and it makes me happy to see her enjoy it as much as I do.

My sister and I make many of the recipes that our parents made, and now we teach them to our kids, from steak pizzaiola to onion pie, and german potato salad to apple butter. We don't just eat together, we create together! Being able to pass on these recipes is especially important to me these days, since both of my parents passed away a few years ago, just a few months apart. I feel like I keep them a part of our lives when we make a dish that was one of their favorites.

One such recipe is my father's Tomato Salad, with lots of fresh ingredients. It's important to have quality produce when you're making a fresh salad, no matter what kind of salad it is, because of the flavor, color, and texture it brings to the finished product. When I would make my dad's salad, I always tried to find Vidalia onions because of their sweet flavor, that complimented the other ingredients.

When I was asked to do a review for Shuman Produce RealSweet® Vidalia onions, I was so excited and started planning what we would make, when my daughter mentioned the tomato salad. Since I love cucumbers and she loves tomatoes, we decided to combine them and make our Tomato, Cucumber, and Onion Salad! When the onions arrived, they were all perfectly ripe with golden skins and I couldn't wait to get started.

Shuman Produce has been a family-owned business providing Vidalia onions for over 30 years, and that experience invokes trust, so I knew their onions would enhance our recipe. The company prides itself on offering a product that is high quality with a sweet taste, and has even located similar soil to that found in Vidalia, Georgia, where the onions originated, in Peru, Texas, and Mexico so they can continue shipping onions throughout the year.

The salad came out wonderfully and had a fantastic flavor! The RealSweet® onions blended perfectly with the garlic and white balsamic vinegar to give just the right amount of zing. Not only do they add flavor, but they taste delicious on their own. And luckily, there were enough onions left over for my sister to make a classic Italian calzone, better known in our family as an onion pie.
